From Italy to Your Walls: The Story Behind the Amalfi
There are certain products in the studio that I’m naturally drawn to, and the Amalfi has always been one of them.
When a client asks me,
“Barbara, if this were your family portrait, what would you choose?”
The Amalfi is almost always my answer.
It’s beautiful, of course. But it’s more than that.
I’ve always believed that when you invest the time to bring your family together, plan what everyone will wear, step in front of my camera, and create a portrait that represents this chapter of your life, the final photograph deserves to become something tangible.
Something you can see every day.
Something that feels like it belongs in your home.
And for me, the Amalfi does exactly that.
This is Not Just a Printed Photograph
The first thing I love about an Amalfi is its presence.
When you see one in person, you understand.
Your photograph is printed as an archival HD Fine Art print and surrounded by beautiful handmade Amalfi cotton paper. The distinctive deckled edges of the paper create subtle dimension and shadow around the photograph, giving the entire piece an almost three-dimensional quality.
The photograph, paper, texture and finished panel all work together.
It doesn’t simply feel like a photograph that has been framed.
It feels like a finished piece of art.
And that distinction matters to me.
When I create a family portrait, my hope has never been for it to spend the next twenty years as a digital file somewhere on your computer.
I want it to become part of your home.

Then Gio and I Went to Italy
Amalfi Coast, 2021
This is where my appreciation for the Amalfi became much more personal.
Gio and I had the opportunity to travel to Italy and visit Graphistudio, where we were able to see the process and craftsmanship behind the products we offer our clients.
There’s something very different about reading that a product is handmade and actually seeing the hands that make it.
We were able to see the materials, the process and the level of attention that goes into creating these pieces.
And the part that stayed with me most was the paper.

The Paper Is Still Made By Hand
The handmade Amalfi paper surrounding the portrait comes from a tradition that goes back hundreds of years.
The process is remarkably hands-on. Cotton pulp is filtered and manually spread onto a screen, one sheet at a time, using traditional paper-making methods.
That means the beautiful deckled edge surrounding your photograph isn’t a digitally created effect designed to look handmade.
It actually is handmade.
Each sheet has its own subtle characteristics, which means no two are completely identical.
Some sheets may even carry the subtle debossed seal of the family-run Italian paper mill that produced them.
I love that.
We live in a world where almost anything can be mass-produced. So there’s something incredibly special about pairing a portrait I created specifically for one family with paper that was also created by hand.
It gives the finished piece a character that you simply don't get from something coming off an assembly line.
Made to Be Beautiful. Made to Last.
Of course, something being beautiful isn't enough for me.
If I'm asking a family to invest in a piece of wall art, I want to know that the materials behind it are worthy of the photograph we're putting on it.
The Amalfi is created using archival, museum/gallery-quality materials. The portrait itself is printed on HD Fine Art inkjet paper, while the handmade cotton paper creates the signature mat surrounding the photograph.
The panel can then be finished in materials such as cotton, linen or wood fiber, allowing us to choose colors and textures that complement both the photograph and the home where it will eventually live.
Depending on the size, the interior can be constructed with an HDF or aluminum core. Larger pieces can use a double-aluminum structure designed to provide additional rigidity and longevity.
Even the back is beautifully finished in linen with an integrated hanger.
Those may seem like small details.
But they're exactly the kind of details I care about.
Because when we're creating something intended to preserve a family photograph for years to come, how it's made matters.
So, Why Would I Choose the Amalfi?
Because I believe the way we preserve a photograph should reflect the importance of what's in it.
I love knowing that the portrait I create here in McAllen will eventually be paired with a centuries-old Italian papermaking tradition.
I love knowing there were hands behind it.
I love the imperfections and character of handmade paper.
I love the archival materials.
I love the way it turns a photograph into something that feels worthy of being passed down.
And after traveling to Italy with Gio and seeing the craftsmanship behind it for myself, I love it even more.
So when a client asks me:
“Barbara, if this were your family portrait, what would you choose?”
You already know my answer.
The Amalfi. Every time.
